An industry expert once said, “Artificial Intelligence is not a Man versus Machine saga; it’s in fact, Man with Machine synergy.” Artificial intelligence (AI) indeed changed the way enterprises operates. In this aspect, Mixed reality (MR) is a product of AI that revolutionized the concept of virtual reality (VR), to present mankind with the latest gift of technology.

What is MR? Is it different than AR?

MR is an advanced version of augmented reality (AR), where interactive virtual objects can be successfully clubbed with physical setting to create a hybrid environment. Although, the core concept of AR and MR is similar yet, the difference between them is defined by the technology used in both cases. The device which creates the experience is different in both cases. MR is experienced through headset device, which also considers the geometric measurement to create a canvas to operate, while AR is experienced through a smart phone or tablet.

Advent of Magic Leap and HoloLens

echnologies such as Magic Leap and HoloLens created a stir adding considerably to the existing MR. HoloLens was created with the hope to solve enterprise level problems while magic leap adds certain amount of entertainment and marvel. Industry experts consider MR as a transformational technology that has the potential to revolutionize the way the virtual world works. This will open the door to enter the virtual world while still a part of the physical world. If we consider the future of entering into a virtual world, it can possibly reduce the need for business travel since the same work or real-life meeting can also happen through a MR device. This will save both time and money.
An AI assistant can help with queries and knowledge transfer automatically, as and when required. This will reduce the requirement for specific skill or training. According to secondary research, approximately 82% of enterprises will be using MR in next three years since, MR has the capability to solve problems faced by enterprises efficiently and in a seamless manner.

Can MR enhance the enterprise operation?

Renault, a French vehicle manufacturer has been using HoloLens to improve the quality of the product, while conducting engine assembly operation. Through HoloLens smart glasses, the quality control operators can integrate all the digitalized parts. The smart glasses in an MR interface will feature instructions, that will help the quality control operators maneuver through the complex process, while taking informed decision. Compared to paper instructions, this will enhance operational efficiency.
Again, ThyssenKrupp a German manufacturer of elevators and escalators are also using HoloLens to enable the field technicians with the necessary information and knowledge to repair machineries efficiently.
BAE systems is an aerospace company that uses HoloLens to make electric propulsion devices. This helped the company to reduce 50% of machine assembly time.

Ease working with Google Glass

Although Google Glass couldn’t win the heart of consumer market due to privacy issues, yet, Google Glass Enterprise Edition proved beneficial in industrial setting. The hands-free device enabled the workers with training videos, images and quality checklists. It also connects co-workers through a live video stream for a real-time troubleshooting and collaboration.

Conclusion

According to secondary market research, by 2025, approximately 14.4 million US workers will use smart glasses by adopting MR in their workspace. MR allows an individual to define the world and add magic in daily lives. By combining physical with digital world through MR, one can alter the rules and invite endless entertainment possibilities.
