Wax is a class of hydrocarbon fats which melts above 40°C and provides a low viscosity liquid after melting. These are insoluble in water but are soluble in nonpolar, organic solvents. Emerging economies and increasing usage of wax in coatings and polishes are driving the wax market.  Increasing usage in the construction projects and in the manufacturing units have added to the growth of the market. This is further aided by the rising consumer base and increasing applications in the cosmetic formulations.

Paraffin wax is the largest segment in the wax market resulting with large number of application areas and relatively cheaper price. Candle making has the highest market share, which is being driven by the increasing demand for perfume candles in hotels and restaurants especially in the developed countries. Asia Pacific is the largest consumer of wax, which is supported by China. The market is highly consolidated with few multinational companies having more than half of the market share. Some of the prominent companies in the market are BASF SE, Dow Chemical Company and Akzo Nobel N.V., among many others.
