Solar Microinverter

Introduction

Solar microinverter is a miniature plug and play type inverter used in solar energy system to convert power at the solar panel from DC electricity to AC electricity. Difference between microinverter and other conventional inverters such as string-Inverters and central inverter is, microinverter can be connected to individual photovoltaic (PV) modules instead of having a single central inverter for the entire solar energy system. In a solar energy system, microinverters are connected in parallel in a group, and the unit string are connected to the converter box. Some of the key advantages of microinverter over traditional inverters includes, easy installation, modular design, weatherproof, less operating cost and optimized power output resulting in 14 – 15% more power per panel.

Market Dynamics

In traditional inverters the number of panels to be connected is pre-defined, which results in limited design options for housing/commercial facilities with different size and shapes. Whereas, in microinverters each inverter in connected to individual solar modules, which offers flexibility in design and supports cost effective expansion of solar power system. Also, microinverters are proven to produce more energy comparted to traditional inverters and disruption of individual solar panel due to solar shading. These factors make microinverter an efficient choice for solar energy system. Furthermore, increasing government initiatives to increase renewable energy adoption, rising customer preference & willingness-to-pay (WTP) for solar energy solutions at the commercial and at the residential level, are accelerating the growth of global microinverter market. However, higher upfront cost compared to traditional inverter and lack of awareness about the long-term benefits of microinverter over traditional inverter is identified as restraints likely to deter the progression of global microinverter market.
