Emotion Analysis and Empathetic Technology
Emotion analysis is widely used across several domains such as healthcare, market research, sports, and media industry. The true potential of emotion analytics could be achieved when used in combination with artificial intelligence. Emotion analytics is being tracked mainly from audio, video and text currently. Majority of companies, especially in retail sector and FMCG are using emotion analytics and are hiring companies that offer emotion-recognition software, such as Affectiva, and Beyond Verbal to optimize and enhance content and media strategy using facial coding and mood analysis on social media.
However, there is an immense scope for analysing emotions from other physical signals such as body temperature and chemical composition. This is termed as empathetic technology and is expected to become a major part of emotion analysis in future. Empathetic technology uses biometrics and human behaviours including how users feel to understand more about the emotions and uses this information to regulate a device’s response more naturally. Empathetic technology helps users to interact with technology in an enhanced way.
Use of sensors including microphones, thermal imaging, and cameras is becoming more prolific. Increasing processing power and reduction in size of silicon chips has led to enhanced processing, which could provide an accurate description of a person’s internal experiences. Use of multiple sensors along with machine learning can create an insightful data which could understand how humans interact and react to various stimuli.
As technology continues to evolve, machines will have better relationship with their users, with empathy as a major factor. Empathy helps to have a natural and easy human interaction with technology and will increasingly become an important part of human and machine interaction in the future. Also, an increasing use of artificial emotional intelligence, to identify emotions such as happiness, sadness, fatigue attention, interest, confusion and distraction could aid the growth of emotion analytics with emphasis on empathetic technology. Empathetic technologies and emotion analysis will influence in several areas including human centric lighting. With empathetic technologies, human centric lighting makes room/environment visually comfortable for the person inside a room based on that person’s emotion.
