BSNL To Launch 5G Services Partnering Various Telecom Vendors

Overview 
The launch of 5G services in the Indian market has grabbed attention and the state-run telecom service provider is focusing on rolling out ultra-high speed 5G services. It has chalked out roadmaps to launch 5G from the start of 2020. While most of other telecom providers are looking to monetize their 4G services, BSNL is looking forward to capitalizing the 5G implementation. It is also believed the launch of 5G in India to take place at par with other foreign markets.

Partnerships – BSNL has tied up an agreement with Japan’s Softbank and NTT Communications for rolling out 5G and IoT products and services in India. The chairman of BSNL has pointed out that BSNL is set to target smart cities for their 5G services launch. 3G services were launched after 7 years it was launched in foreign markets and 4G services were launched after 4 years of its inception in foreign markets. BSNL partnered with Cisco and Nokia to develop 5G ecosystem. BSNL has also partnered with Coriant and ZTE on 5G roadmap to facilitate enterprises and consumers by the start of 2020.

Synergy – The success is dependent on adoption on 5G devices and Smart Phones. BSNL is set to take the early steps in adoption of 5G services. Nokia is expected to help BSNL on SDN and multi-access edge computing. The government is expected to finalize the allocation of bandwidth spectrum for 5G services.  BSNL is looking forward to starting field trials for 5G services and is in agreement with government to seeking 5G spectrum for trials. BSNL is also expected to take help of Softbank which has 900 satellites to get high speed internet services. BSNL plans to launch 5G services prior to Reliance Jio and Airtel in India. BSNL has acquired airwaves in the 700 MHz band from Department of Telecom (DoT) to launch 5G and 4G LTE services. BSNL is capitalizing on various initiatives taken by ministers to empower its position in the market. It would be interesting to see how the telcos compete and if BSNL wins the race with first to market strategy.
