Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a remote sensing system that uses visible or near-infrared laser energy to measure the distance between an object and sensor. LiDAR system emits focused intense beam of laser light and measures two-way travel time of a laser pulse (i.e., a system to object and the reflected light from the object to the sensor). Further, the information is used to compute distances/ranges to objects. LiDAR is an active remote sensing technology that emits pulses of light (laser beams) and detects the reflected light. LiDAR is an efficient system for identifying objects, often used as imaging sensors for two-dimensional (2D) imaging (similar to the traditional passive electro-optical sensor) or 3D imaging (range is measured in each pixel/voxel).
