Soda Ash Market Witnessing Changes!

Soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate, is one of the most used chemicals in world. Soda ash is used in manufacturing of various downstream products such as glass and detergent manufacturing. The global soda ash market has witnessed some activity in the recent past wherein the market has been dynamic to some extent. The changes have been dominantly coming due to the regulatory changes w.r.t. the technological acceptability.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan inaugurated the new Soda Ash production facility on 15th January, 2018. Kazan Soda Elektrik Üretim A.Ş., a subsidiary of Ciner Group (largest group in Turey owns the plant wherein 2.7 million tons of heave soda ash and 200,000 tons of sodium bicarbonate will be produced. The complete soda ash production in new plant is targeted for exports to numerous countries across Europe, Middle East and Asia. President Erdoğan said “Turkey produces 10% of the world soda ash and catering to 50% of European Soda ash requirements.

With this new plant becoming operational, Turkey has become the largest producer of heavy soda ash. With export-oriented approach of new plant, the market of soda ash is expected to become even more competitive. The mercury-based soda ash production facilities in Europe presented some production issues in recent past. The new plant is expected to pose even more pressure on European producers.

On other hand, the Tata Chemicals’ proposed soda ash plant in Tanzania has been abandoned in light of environmental concerns on breeding site for Lesser Flemingos. The three-year long process was given in favour of environmental activists. While Tata Chemicals lost this opportunity, they signed deal to buy Allied Silica with eye on highly dispersible silica production in Tamil Nadu, India. The business was noted to come with specialty chemical, representing downstream value addition to existing soda ash business.
