Smart Corridors: the new world of transportation

“SMART CORRIDOR” is a proactive technology-based initiative, to improve traffic management, majorly across congested freight corridors. Moreover, smart corridors are dedicated sectors of a roadway network, featuring specialized signage for driver assistance and real-time alerts about the weather, nearby accidents, and other obstacles.

Smart corridors have been primarily deployed across freight corridors to ease out trade routes using intelligent transportation systems. These systems assist transport authorities and fleet administrators with the provisions for real-time traffic updates that enable proactive routing of the consignments for on time delivery of shipments. It also empowers parcel and package delivery companies to proactively plan and schedule their workforce accordingly.

Smart Corridor Characteristics:

  • Improved mobility by providing real-time information to stakeholders about the freight movement
  • Enhanced transportation system with simplification of cross-border administrative procedures
  • It enhances the road network operations to ensure safe travel
  • Implementation of key WTO (world Trade Organization)/WCO (World custom Organization) and RECs (Renewable Energy Certificate System) transport and trade facilitation tools such as electronic National Single Windows, One Stop Border Posts, Weigh-in-Motion Weighbridges

Several smart corridors have been implemented in recent years majorly across the North American region. For instance, in 2017, Atlanta implemented smart corridor under “The North Avenue Smart Corridor Project”, while the Metro Vancouver region along with the city of Surrey initiated the planning and design implementation of two pilot projects of smart corridors for commercial vehicles. This will address the changing patterns and increase in trade along the Canada’s Pacific Gateway.

These projects are intended to reduce congestion across major intersections, with rapid, seamless, and secure movement of goods, thereby cutting down on costs incurred from delays due to traffic congestion and control pollution from vehicle emissions. Moreover, it is also anticipated that these corridors will facilitate improvement in emergency response by routing and prioritizing movement of fire engines and ambulances.

Conclusion:

Traffic congestions have become a major problem across the cities globally and smart corridors can significantly help in optimizing the traffic flow. Additionally, it can cater to rapid response for emergency and incident management with seamless transit across the city. Smart corridors also enhance road user experience with prominent safety signs, digital information boards, ramp meters, and smart signals along the corridor.

With rapidly growing global smart city initiatives to operate energy efficient autonomous vehicles, integrated with V2V communication systems, these transport corridors are set to create a perfect stage for testing and eventually deployment of integrated solutions that enable effective traffic management platform. This concept will open new frontiers for connectivity solutions across the transportation sector with features such as advanced driver assistance, charging stations for electric vehicles, smart street lightings, smart signals, and intelligent digital signage.
