Previously, CAD and GIS were the technologies that had great impact on designing facilities. Nowadays technology adoption in facility management has taken a leap forward towards better buildings, and analytics for optimum utilization. The smart technologies can significantly reduce the shrinkages and cost associated in monitoring the goods in the facilities. There are few technologies such as mobility, smart sensors, IoT, and automation impacting the design and development of new facilities. An integrated approach in managing the facilities give major boost in reduction of cost in monitoring the inventories and manufacturing units.
Key trends in facility management:
- Cost: The facilities face continuous pressure to reduce cost in monitoring people and goods, while maintaining the inventories and production. Some cost sensitive areas are production, labours, optimum usage of area, among others.
- Mobility: Mobile phones and apps are expected to create great impact in future on managing services. Empowering employees with mobile applications and thus automating the workflows lead to better communication with managers in real-time. It helps in organized and authorization-based management through apps.
- Smart Buildings: It helps in centralized management of buildings containing HVAC, lighting, sensors, building management systems, along with best methods to resolve in case of any issue. The smart buildings initiatives provide a safer place to work along with improving efficiency.
- IoT and automation: IoT helps when there is a large network of connected things. IoT collects data from multiple points such as devices, wearables, buildings, and others. IoT software is used that analyse various alert systems, lighting, temperature, and others. Automated process and robots have already made an impact in facilities and facility management.
All the new technologies are making facilities more integrated and enhancing smooth communication among different levels of an organization. The integration of all technologies would lead to optimized management of facilities. Along with all the technologies for facilities, technologies like AI and ML are expected to benefit the management of facilities with recording of workplace and resource data. Various collaboration tools integrated to other software applications or ERP systems can leverage the business outcome of an enterprise. With the impact of Industry 4.0, we can expect more automation and shift towards more productive and smart facilities around the globe in near future.
