Growth of eSIM and iSIM

October, 2019

esimSIM cards have witnessed a series of changes over the past few years. SIM has evolved to address the growing requirement of minimization in electronic devices, i.e., from standard SIM to mini SIM, micro SIM, and nano SIM. The latest development in SIM technology came with the arrival of eSIM and iSIM, which is embedded in the device and is expected to be widely used in IoT devices. eSIM and iSIM help to address many issues faced by traditional physical SIM. A physical SIM card needs a large amount of space in the device and could be easily damaged or stolen. eSIM and iSIM offer a robust scalable solution based on the vendor-neutral standard developed by GSMA. The authentication layer eSIM and iSIM assist mobile network operators (MNO) in payment and authentication.

iSIM is an advanced version of eSIM. The major change is that the SIM hardware is integrated into system-on-chip (SOC) that has a processor and cellular modem. Unlike eSIM, iSIM has not been standardized, but it makes the SIM functionality a part of the device’s permanent hardware unit. While eSIM requires a separate processor, iSIM does not need one and does not consume much space since it is integrated within the onboard processor and cellular modem. eSIM is more secure when compared to physical SIM, but iSIM raises the security level since it is located in a secure location on an SoC and provides an extra layer of security over payment and other critical applications. Another major advantage of iSIM is that it is less expensive and requires fewer components to build when compared to eSIM. Though the cost advantage is very less when an individual unit is considered, the difference becomes huge in cases including enterprise-level IoT implementation that requires several iSIM-/eSIM-enabled IoT devices.
